We, the Green Riders…
The “Youth and Climate Change” campaign, a joint initiative of the Center for Environment Education (CEE), SAYEN, UNEP and the Times of India (TOI) was started with the understanding that there were many actions being taken by youth in Ahmedabad and they needed to be heard, it was also to bring young people together at a common platform to unite their voices against issues they felt strongly about.

Bringing together youth from around Ahmedabad, ‘Green Hunt’, a treasure hunt on cycles took youth in search of the green spaces of the city. ‘Green Drive’, a rally against air pollution brought out the young guns in full force shouting slogans like “Stop, Wait, Go…Green” and “Bachao bachao fuel bachao, chalao chalao Cycle chalao…”
Keeping in mind this year’s theme, CO2: Pick Right, Towards Growth and Sustainability a street play was penned down and performed by the Green Riders at Vastrapur Lake and at the 10 acre, Ahmedabad City Mall (ACM) bringing alive the issues of Sustainable alternatives. A ‘Youth Haat’ was also set up where the youth sold cloth bags and kulhads at a nominal price, whilst explaining to people why these made for better alternatives to plastics. Face painting, canvas writing and games like snakes and ladders, and energy scrabble grabbed the attention of the crowds. All activities and games espoused and reiterated the message of positive choices and alternatives. |

Health, over the years has gained importance in people’s lives. Today, more and more people, especially the youth are making an effort to move towards a healthy lifestyle. In such a scenario, health education has become an important aspect of the school/college curriculum. There is a need for youth to be aware about the importance of health with special regards to their environment, since the environment in which they live is an important determinant of their health and well being.
