South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN), Centre for Environment Education(CEE), and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in association with the Times of India (ToI) have initiated the “Youth and Climate Change Campaign” from 22nd April, 2008 (Earth Day) to 5th June, 2008 (World Environment Day).
“Climate change is real and is affecting all of us. The world is getting warmer and human activity is a major cause of this. The problem calls for an urgent response; but the situation is not entirely hopeless, at least, not yet. Youth has the highest stake since it concerns our future as well as the present. We need to come together and work as agents of change.” – Gopal Kumar Jain, Coordinator, Youth Programmes, CEE
Youth accounts for 40% of the global population. Over the years, it has been observed that our changing consumption patterns with a lifestyle focused on high resource use, inefficient and ineffective processes, high waste generation and improper disposal has led to increase in emission levels and thus contributed to climate change. Thus, it’s high time that we, as youth, play a major role of not only following sustainable lifestyle ourselves but also motivating others to do so. To tackle climate change we need to act responsibly. We have to bring in small changes in our daily life that include actions such as walking or bicycling for short distances, wearing clothes appropriate to the seasons, watching for pollution and regularly maintaining our vehicles. Thus, it is essential that we consider the environmental impact of our everyday actions and choices.
The Green Riders is a group of young people in Ahmedabad that care deeply about the future of our planet and are actively working towards a sustainable outcome. WE, the Green Riders campaign and formulate programmes and events to reach out as much number of youth as possible. Our motive it is to bring small change in our own life style and others, whom we interact with
