Activities in the college

Under the Project SamVednaa: An initiative to create model green colleges, SAYEN, Centre for Environment Education with support from the APFED is facilitating green activities in selected colleges in Gujarat.

This is an update of recent activites that the SamVednaa ecol club members of the Department of Microbiology, Mahadev Desai Gramseva Mahavidyalay, Sadra undertook:
  1. Eco club members with the responsibility of “Energy conservation” are experimenting with the potential of generating electricity from digester slurry of biogas plant in the campus. The college has adopted the use of renewable energy sources by installing Peddle lights, Solar street lights, and demonstration model of generation of electricity through Biogas. The college is soon to install steam based cooking system for hostel kitchen powered by solar energy, i.e. a parabolic stove.

  2. To enhance the biodiversity in the college campus, the microbiology students have initiated soil testing, analyzing the nutrient content in the soil. Students have set up Eco Corner in the campus, with various plants of medicinal and ornamental values. Labeling the existing tree varieties with signages along with their scientific names, putting unused flower pots to use, and spreading awareness towards use of natural and organic items by distributing Green Tea, jowar juice have been some of the commendable efforts of the team “Biodiversity” in the college campus.

  3. Eco Club members focusing on “Waste” have very resourcefully utilized the leaf waste of the campus, by the method of open composting. Club members have actively participated in awareness drive in the college regarding separation of plastic waste from the biodegradable green waste. Students are using the organic manure generated from composting in various green areas of the college, specially a small farm of bottle gourd!

Talking about the place Sadra, a village in Gandhinagar district in Gujarat has specific importance. On one side of the college, a fort wall can be seen which was built by the King Ahmed Shah who used to take rest on his way to Delhi . During that period, the college was used as an operation theatre and Naturopathy Centre. Later it was given to Gujarat Vidyapith and now we can find Mahadev Desai Gramseva Mahavidyalaya, Dept. of Microbiology.

In early 20 th century, Gandhiji has started five institutions which are as follows

In 1978, Mahadev Desai Gramseva Mahavidyalay was started in Sadra which was only for boys and was offering courses in Physical Education and Social Sciences. In 1993, Biogas Research Centre was set up in the campus. From 1995 the Department of Microbiology was started in the college which included B.Sc, M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D courses in Microbiology. The details of which are as below

  1. 1995 - B.Sc Microbiology
  2. 1999- M.Sc Microbiology
  3. 2003-2004 - M.Phil in Microbiology
  4. 2005 - Ph.D in Microbiology

At present Mahadev Desai Gramseva Mahavidyaly has two campuses. One campus is completely for Microbiology department and the other campus is for Physical Education and Social Sciences.
